Abstract

This chapter addresses fraud prevention and disruption. The 4Ps strategy for fraud has four elements, three of which are encompassed in traditional prevention activities: namely prevent, protect, and prepare. Additionally, within the Fraud Investigation Model (FIM), both prevention and disruption are key considerations in ensuring an effective response to fraud. The chapter begins by describing the options available to prevent fraud and how, with knowledge of fraud typologies, use of existing crime prevention techniques, and engagement, fraud prevention can be highly effective. It then examines the opportunities for disrupting the activities of the fraudster by denying them access to the key enablers of fraud. Ultimately, prevention activities should be focused on raising awareness of the fraudster's activities to make potential victims aware of the numerous fraud typologies. This will in turn 'target harden' individuals and organisations.
