Abstract
This chapter defines the terms ‘fraud’ and ‘economic crime’ and places them in context within the twenty-first century. It helps the investigator understand how profiles of fraudsters and knowledge of fraud indicators can be used to help prevent, disrupt, and investigate cases. The chapter also details the organisations, structures, and systems at the local, regional, and national levels to tackle fraud. Finally, it looks at the Fraud Investigation Model (FIM). This is used to counter fraud through the application of a logical process focused on reducing the harm it causes, supporting victims and implementing operational learning. This model is referenced in the Policing Fraud document contained in the College of Policing's Authorised Professional Practice (APP) for investigations.
